This article discusses best practices for assigning subnets in ControlOne.
Environment
- Cytracom ControlOne
Description
ControlOne isolates each tenant’s logical networking using subnets. Follow these guidelines when assigning your subnets to ControlOne.
Don’t use common or private-range subnets
Avoid using commonly used home router and public hotspot IP subnets This includes the following address ranges:
- 192.168.0.0/24
- 192.168.1.0/24
- 192.168.10.0/24
- 10.0.0.0/24
- 10.1.10.0/24 (common to Comcast)
- 172.16.0.0/24
Use unique subnets for each Site
Do not re-use the same subnet in the same tenant. For example, if you are using 10.1;.2.0/24 on Site 1, do not also use that subnet on Site 2.
Be careful not to overlap subnets
Overlapping subnets occur when two or more IP address ranges in a network share some of the same addresses. This can happen if the subnet masks or IP address ranges are configured incorrectly. For example:
- Subnet A: 192.168.1.0/24 (which covers addresses 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255)
- Subnet B: 192.168.1.128/25 (which covers addresses 192.168.1.128 to 192.168.1.255)
In this example, subnet B is actually part of subnet A, since it falls within its address range.
If your network has overlapping subnets you may experience routing issues, device communication issues, and security concerns. You can use a subnet overlap calculator to ensure your network has no overlaps.
