Topic
This article discusses how to use the ControlOne agent over a public WiFi captive portal.
Environment
- ControlOne Agent
Description
Many public WiFi connections are offered via login to a Captive Portal launch screen which governs permissions and access. Until a successful connection with the Captive Portal is established, the WiFi system restricts internet access to your device, and the ControlOne Agent cannot connect successfully.
This procedure describes how to temporarily disable the ControlOne Agent so the connection with the Captive Portal can be established.
User access to the ControlOne UI
There are three different conditions your Administrator can assign regarding your ability to temporarily disable the ControlOne Agent:
- Full access to connect and disconnect the ControlOne Agent. In this case, the UI displays a prominent connection button.

Access to pause the ControlOne Agent for 30 seconds, allowing time to complete a Captive Portal authentication.

- No access to the UI, preventing you from disconnecting or pausing the ControlOne Agent. In this case, contact your IT Admin and request further assistance.
NOTE: If you plan to travel and use the ControlOne Agent, it is a good idea to make sure you have access to Disconnect/Pause the Agent connection prior to your departure. Contact your IT Administrator for guidance.
Procedure
1. Before connecting to the public WiFi network, disconnect or pause the ControlOne agent connection.
2. Log into the public WiFi network, and complete the authentication process. Make sure you can reach the internet over the network.
3. Reconnect or resume the ControlOne Agent. The connection should now be established and stable.
Other Captive Portal connection issues
If, after performing this procedure, you experience issues in which the Agent remains in a "connecting" or "retrying" state, see this article for further assistance.
